"Never have I ever" is the perfect game to learn surprising things about your friends. A player names something they've never done; anyone who has done it owns up. The rules fit in one sentence, and the revelations start from the first round. Here's how to play and 100 statements sorted by theme.

The rules of never have I ever

  1. Players sit in a circle.
  2. Taking turns, each player says a sentence that starts with "Never have I ever…", for example "Never have I ever missed a flight".
  3. Everyone who has done that thing shows it: they take a sip, put a finger down or score a point, depending on the version.
  4. Move on to the next player.

The funniest part isn't the sentence but what comes next: everyone wants to ask "When? With whom?". Leave time for the stories.

Three ways to play

With fingers

Each player starts with ten fingers up. Each time a statement applies to them, they put one down. The first player with no fingers left loses. It's the simplest version, with no alcohol and no equipment.

With points

Each confession scores a point. At the end, you find out who in the group has "done it all". This version works well with colleagues or family, with statements chosen accordingly.

The drinking version

Anyone who has done the thing takes a sip. Keep the amounts small, and remember that any sip can be replaced with a soft drink: nobody has to drink to play.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Targeting one person: a statement written to trap one friend works once, not three times. Keep statements that concern everyone.
  • Forgetting your audience: spicy statements don't belong with family or colleagues. Pick your list before you start.
  • Forcing confessions: the game reveals things, but everyone is free not to tell the story behind it.
