Truth or dare is the simplest party game there is: no cards, no board, just a group of friends and a bit of nerve. On each turn, a player chooses between answering a question honestly (truth) or taking on a challenge (dare). Here are the rules, variations for every group and 100 ready-to-use ideas.

The rules of truth or dare

  1. Sit in a circle. The first player is picked at random, for example by spinning a bottle.
  2. They choose a player and ask: "Truth or dare?"
  3. If the player picks truth, they answer the question honestly. If they pick dare, they do the challenge.
  4. Once the question or dare is done, it's their turn to choose the next player.

Variations that work well

Spin the bottle

Instead of choosing the next player, spin a bottle in the middle of the circle. Whoever it points to has to choose truth or dare. Chance keeps the same people from always being targeted.

The drinking version

A player who refuses a question or a dare takes a sip. Keep the amounts small, and remember that any sip can be replaced with a soft drink: the game stays fun without anyone ending the night too early.

In teams

Make two teams. Each team takes turns giving a question or a dare to a player from the other team. An honest truth or a completed dare scores a point; after ten rounds, the team with the most points wins.

Truth only

For a group that doesn't know each other well, or a quiet evening, keep only the truths. The light questions below are enough to get everyone talking.

A few tips for a good game

  • Fit the questions to the group: spicy questions work among close friends, much less with colleagues.
  • Respect the right to pass: a party game should stay fun for everyone. Nobody has to drink or answer.
  • Mix it up: truth after truth gets heavy, dare after dare gets tiring. Alternating works well.
  • No dangerous dares: nothing high up, nothing near the road, nothing with strong alcohol, nothing that means touching someone who didn't ask for it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules of truth or dare?

The player whose turn it is picks "truth" or "dare"; the group asks them a question or gives them a challenge. Anyone can pass, in exchange for a small forfeit or a point.

How do you find good questions?

Start with light questions to get the game going, then move to more personal ones once everyone is relaxed. The 100 ideas on this page follow that order.

Which dares work with nothing at hand?

Funny, harmless dares you can do on the spot: impersonate someone in the group, speak with an accent for a round, declare your love to an object. Nobody should be made uncomfortable.

Truth or dare with Partizo

In the Partizo app, Freestyle has the spirit of truth or dare: the phone draws random cards (votes, duels, dares, "never have I ever") and picks the players itself. No need to come up with ideas or choose who goes next: just read the card. For physical challenges and impressions, Showtime has wacky challenges judged by the group.
