Freshers' week, a flat party, the end of exams: a great student night often comes down to the right game at the right moment. You need rules that take a minute to explain, that work with ten people or thirty, and that mix those who don't know each other yet. Here are 15 ideas sorted by moment of the night, with or without alcohol.

Before you start

  • Drinking games are for adults only. Nobody has to drink: any sip can be swapped for a soft drink or a forfeit.
  • Small amounts. The rules talk about sips, never whole glasses. Have water and food at hand.
  • No hazing. No game should humiliate anyone, force them or put them in danger. A party game must stay fun for everyone.
  • Plan the way home. Nobody drives after drinking: plan a sober driver, public transport, a taxi or a sofa for the night.

To break the ice

1Two truths and a lie

  • 4–20 players
  • 15–20 min
  • Nothing needed
  • No alcohol

Everyone states three things about themselves, one of them false; the others guess which. Perfect at the start of the night to get to know each other.

2“Who's most likely to”

  • 4–30 players
  • 15–20 min
  • Nothing needed
  • With or without alcohol

One question, and everyone points at the person who fits: “Who's most likely to sleep through their exam?”. Find 100 questions in our “Who's most likely to” guide.

3Never have I ever

  • 4–30 players
  • 15–30 min
  • Nothing needed
  • With or without alcohol

Everyone names something they have never done; those who have done it own up. The perfect game to hear everyone's stories. Ideas in our 100 “Never have I ever” questions.

4Speed meeting

  • 8–40 players
  • 20–30 min
  • Nothing needed
  • No alcohol

Players pair up and have two minutes to find three things in common, then switch partners. At the end of each round, everyone shares the most surprising discovery.

For big groups

5Werewolf

  • 8–18 players
  • 30–60 min
  • A deck of cards
  • No alcohol

The king of parties with more than ten people: bluffing, accusations and unlikely alliances. Every role is in our guide to Werewolf roles.

6Celebrity

  • 4–16 players
  • 30–45 min
  • Pen and paper
  • No alcohol

Two teams make each other guess the same cards (celebrities, characters, objects) over three rounds: first by describing freely, then with a single word, then by miming. The cards come back each round, and the memories become group jokes. Full rules on the Celebrity page.

7Music quiz

  • 4–40 players
  • 20–40 min
  • A phone
  • No alcohol

A host plays song clips, and teams shout out the title or the artist. Easy to prepare, it gets everyone on board. Tips and themes in our music quiz guide.

8Team quiz

  • 6–40 players
  • 30–45 min
  • Pen and paper
  • No alcohol

General knowledge questions, teams of four and a scoreboard: the atmosphere is guaranteed by the third question. 50 questions in our general knowledge quiz.

The drinking classics

9Pong

  • 4–12 players
  • 15–30 min
  • Glasses
  • Drinking game

Two teams, two triangles of cups filled with water and a ping-pong ball. When the ball lands in an opposing cup, the team that was hit takes a sip of their own drink and removes the cup. The first team with no cups left loses. Filling the cups with water keeps the game clean and puts the focus on skill.

10Pyramid

  • 2–9 players
  • 30–45 min
  • A deck of cards
  • Drinking game

A deck of cards, bluffing and memory: you win cards by guessing, then give them away in a pyramid to make the others drink. Full rules in our card drinking games.

11Horse race

  • 3–20 players
  • 10–20 min
  • A deck of cards
  • Drinking game

The four aces race, and everyone bets a few sips on a horse. Perfect for big groups: everyone plays at the same time. See the Horse race rules.

12The circle

  • 3–10 players
  • 30–60 min
  • A deck of cards
  • Drinking game

All the cards spread in a circle, each with its rule: give out sips, make up a rule, ask a question… Rules in our card drinking games.

Alcohol-free and just as fun

13Mock trial

  • 3–20 players
  • 15–20 min
  • Nothing needed
  • No alcohol

A defendant, a prosecutor, a jury and a ridiculous crime (“stealing the flat's last croissant”): each side pleads for thirty seconds, and the jury decides. In the app, it's Objection!.

14Wacky challenges

  • 4–20 players
  • 15–30 min
  • Nothing needed
  • No alcohol

Impersonate a lecturer, sing like an opera singer, present tonight's weather forecast: everyone takes on a challenge in front of the others, and the group judges. In the app, it's Showtime.

15Charades

  • 4–20 players
  • 15–30 min
  • Nothing needed
  • No alcohol

A film, a job, a phrase to get across without a word. Simple, effective, and always funnier than you think. In the app, the third round of Celebrity is played as mime, and Showtime has mime challenges too.

Our tips for a great night

  • Start gently: an icebreaker, then a team game, then the livelier games.
  • Alternate drinking games and alcohol-free games: the night lasts longer and everyone enjoys it.
  • Think of the neighbours: speed games are noisy, keep them for before 10 p.m.
  • Mix the groups: team games are a chance to split up the usual friend circles.

Frequently asked questions

Which game for a freshers' party?

Two truths and a lie or speed meeting to get to know each other, then Werewolf or Celebrity to mix the groups. Team games break up the little circles of friends.

How do you keep a party free of hazing?

No game should humiliate, pressure or endanger anyone: everyone can turn down a dare or a sip without explaining why. A party game has to stay fun for everyone.

Which alcohol-free games work at a student party?

The improvised trial, wacky challenges and charades get as many laughs as drinking games. A music quiz or a team quiz also wins everyone over.

With the Partizo app

A single phone replaces the cards, dice and paper: Celebrity for teams, Werewolf for big groups, Blindtest and Quiz for competitions, Freestyle, Pyramid and Horse race for drinking games. The drinking games show a prevention message, and the app is for adults only.
